Default CoRPGs & Twitch Players

Wow...a fascinating article that digs right at the heart of GW albeit via NWN. Oh...and a slight vindication of Elistan Theocrat, who was accused in another thread of "inventing" the "twitch" title for a certain type of FPS/PvPers.

*snip*It is undeniable the influence first person shooters (FPS) and real time strategy (RTS) have had on computer RPG’s (CRPG) in recent years. Back in the day of Sir Tech and SSI CRPG’s there was no instant gratification. They were slower placed, long drawn out stories, mostly turn based combat, with highly detailed characters and stats. Compared a Sir Tech CRPG and Doom 1 was pretty obvious differences back then.

With the popularity of games like the Red Alert series which put RTS’s on the map in the mid 90’s (and the dozens of clones that followed) the CRPG industry felt the need to keep pace (and get a slice of the pie) it seemed.

I dunno - although I've played many pc rpgs (I'm 27... and a gamer since I was very young on a Commodore 64 , they mostly seemed pretty stale affairs. Sure, they were free roaming, but they had little in the way of a story or characters.

Just try to think of a novel describing Fallout, BG 1/2, NWN etc, and you'll realise just how much extra stuff you have to make up... backstory, characters, conversation, physical appearance etc.

I'm more of a fan of console rpgs, which, whilst more limited in the character creation and free roaming aspects, offer more detailed characters and stories, and more emotional involvement. For a long time I've wanted to make a FF8 movie with recordings of key dialogue points and cutscenes (since the gameplay itself was pretty weak in that one

Even now, console RPGs are:

"slower placed, long drawn out stories, mostly turn based combat, with highly detailed characters and stats"

And with the graphical power of consoles these days, and the aesthetic sense of the japanese game companies, they offer "Instant Gratification" as well. Bahamut anyone?

I only wish GW was half as fun to watch as any good console RPG... but it's not to be, probably.

I personally love twitch FPS and longer, thinking games. Anything that tries (and succeeds) to combine the two gets an A++ from me.
